Oral Appliances for Sleep Disordered Breathing

At Arvada West Dental Care, one of the sleep apnea treatments we recommend the most often is the Vivos system, a revolutionary technology designed to improve, and sometimes completely resolve, the symptoms of sleep disordered breathing.

The majority of sleep breathing disorders are a result of blockage in the airway, whether that is caused by collapsing soft tissues or the tongue falling back during sleep, and are aggravated by underdeveloped jaws. Vivos not only addresses the immediate symptoms of sleep disordered breathing by holding the airway open during sleep, but it also stimulates jaw growth to help correct the underlying cause as well. The Vivos system is an effective and convenient solution for children and adults alike, and oral appliances, such as the Vivos system, offer a comfortable and convenient alternative to CPAP machines for the treatment of sleep apnea and the development of the airway and jaws.
These appliances are worn during sleep and play a crucial role in promoting the natural growth and proper alignment of the teeth, jaws and mouth. While the Vivos treatment is suitable for both children and adults, it holds particular benefits for children. By addressing underlying developmental issues early with Vivos, it may be possible to eliminate the need for braces and prevent various future health concerns.

The Comprehensive Approach of the Vivos System

The Vivos system adopts a holistic approach to treatment, aiming to improve overall health and address sleep breathing disorders. The Vivos treatment has the potential to improve a range of symptoms, including but not limited to:

    ADHD.

    Anxiety.

    Bedwetting.

    Arrested growth.

    Snoring.

    Allergies or asthma.

    Headaches.

    Hypertension.

    Weight gain.

What to Expect With the Vivos System

The Vivos system, from beginning to end, is completed in four simple visits to our office:

  • 1

    Step 1: Sleep Consultation

During your consultation, our dentist will listen to any concerns you may have and assess the symptoms you or your child are experiencing. We will collect medical history and perform a comprehensive exam to determine if sleep and breathing issues are related to a compromised airway.

  • 2

    Step 2: Diagnosis Appointment

We will take photos and a 3D digital impression of your smile in order to officially diagnose the sleep or breathing issues and to create a customized treatment plan for you or your child.

  • 3

    Step 3: Oral Appliance Completed

At your third appointment, our doctors will fit your oral appliance and provide detailed instructions for its use. This is also the appointment your child will receive their first growth guide appliance. In most cases, the Vivos appliance is recommended to be worn at night.

  • 4

    Step 4: Progress Monitoring

Throughout treatment we will schedule follow-up visits approximately two to four weeks apart, to assess you or your child’s progress and to adjust the Vivos appliance to accommodate changes in the shape of your upper arch and airway. The treatment is typically complete after 12 to 24 months.

Whether you are struggling with a simple snoring issue or a more complicated case of obstructive sleep apnea, Dr. Jeffrey T. Lodl will recommend a treatment personalized to your needs.
